Super easy to make, this buttery, moist and soft apple cake has layers of thinly sliced apples and a sweet and flavorful streusel topping! Just perfect with a cup of coffee!Apple cake with streusel topping recipe (1)

I don’t even know how to begin describing this apple cake. It’s buttery, moist, soft, with thinly sliced apples and topped with a sweet cinnamon streusel topping. If you ask me,the layers of soft apples and the cinnamon streusel topping arethe best part. Better than any frosting!I usually pick up the topping and the soft apples before eating the rest of the cake. Just like a picky eater!

The apples make this cake incredible moist. They not only releasemoisture during baking but their moisture makesthe cake stay fresh for days after the cake is baked (that if the cake lasts that long!)

If I have to pick one fruit to make desserts with year round, it would be a tie between apples and berries. I love them both equally, either to eat fresh or to bake with. This apple cake makes indeed a wonderful fall dessert but since somehow winter has not arrived in my area, I can still enjoy a slice.

Plus, since it’s so easy to make, I see no reason you should not be making it for you and your family to enjoy while sipping on a cup of cocoa, coffee or tea. You can either have a piece in the morning or in the afternoon. Don’t worry,I won’t tell anyone if you have two slices!Apple cake with streusel topping recipe (3)

Like I mentioned earlier, the cake is super easy to make.

You start with the cinnamon streusel topping – just combine either in a bowl of a food processor cold butter, sugar, cinnamon and self rising flour. I know self rising flour is one of those ingredients you don’t use very often, but I have tried this cake recipe using all-purpose flour and baking powder but the results were not as delicious as I hoped.

For the cake you’ll also need self rising flour, soft butter, sugar, eggs, cinnamon, milk and thinly sliced apples. I used granny smith apples but you can also use any cooking apples you have on hand. Honey crisp and Roma apples are one of my favorites as well.

The cake batter is thick, you’ll need a spoonor a spatula to arrange it into a 9″ round cake pan. One you smooth out the top, arrange the apple slices in an evenlayer. Finish the cake with the streuseltopping before baking it. Keep in mind the cake requires little over an hour in the oven and a few hours to cool completely before you can slice it! I usually make it in the evenly and have a slice with my morning cup of coffee! After all that’s why is called coffee cake, right?

FAQs

Is streusel the same as crumble? ›

Streusel is similar to crumb topping and the terms are often used interchangeably. Traditionally, the two have different ratios of the same ingredients, with streusel containing more flour, and crumb topping more sugar, so they offer a different texture and flavor on top of baked goods.

What's the difference between coffee cake and streusel? ›

What is a coffee cake? Although the name suggests a coffee-flavored cake, in the USA it usually means a cake made to pair well with coffee. These are usually cakes topped with streusel (crumbs) and often sugar icing, but never creme-type frosting, as in a layer cake.

Why does my apple cake fall apart? ›

There are two main reasons why an apple cake would fall apart: (1) it was simply too warm when you were trying to cut and serve it or (2) you used too many/the wrong kind of apple. See notes above about picking and choosing the best kinds of apples for a recipe like this.

What is the top of crumb cake made of? ›

Make the crumb topping: Mix the brown sugar, granulated sugar, cinnamon, and salt together in a medium bowl. Stir in the melted butter, then gently mix the flour using a fork. Keep the mixture as large crumbles, do not over-mix. If over-mixed, this will turn into a thick paste.

What is the secret to good crumble? ›

❓FAQ
  • Use cold butter. This will help to create a crumbly texture that will not stick together when baking.
  • Use a mix of flour and oats. The oats will add a bit of crunch and texture to the topping.
  • Don't overmix the ingredients. The crumble topping should be made with a "coarse" crumb.

Why is my streusel topping not crumbly? ›

Why is my streusel not crumbly? Often this happens if the crumb topping is over-mixed or if the butter was much too hot. Over-mixing will leave you with a pasty, batter-like mixture rather than the crumbly topping you are aiming for.

Why is my apple cake raw in the middle? ›

A cake can remain doughy/uncooked in the middle while its burning on the outside when the temperature of the oven is too high. You will have to cook it at a lower temperature for a longer time to receive an even bake. If your pans are made of glass or dark metal, try lowering the oven temperature by 28 degrees.

Why does my apple cake sink in the middle? ›

Your cake is often subject to sinking in the middle due to various factors, including inaccurate oven temperature, excessive or insufficient leavening agent, overmixing of the batter, or premature opening of the oven door. Moisture loss or incorrect ingredient ratios may also play a role.

Why is my apple cake dense? ›

There's a big chance your butter and sugar will over-cream, meaning the butter will trap more air than it should. As the batter bakes, that extra air will deflate and leave you with an overly dense cake. It's all science!

Is it better to crumble with cold or melted butter? ›

A well-made crumb should be firm yet tender, and chewy, with big chunks—like granola. The best way to achieve this is to use cold cubed butter. Using room-temperature or melted butter will cause the topping to spread out and flatten when it bakes, rather than standing pert and perky.

Can you add streusel after baking? ›

Absolutely! I have included in the recipe card below the instructions on how to bake streusel topping alone. You can use this on top of a frosted cake, or even add it onto any recipe that uses streusel topping…the pre-baked streusel will make the topping extra crispy!

Do you put crumble on before or after baking? ›

Add crumb topping to any muffin, cake or pie recipe before baking.

What is the American version of crumble? ›

Apple crisp is a dessert made with a streusel topping. In the US, it is also called apple crumble, a word which refers to a different dessert in the UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Ingredients usually include cooked apples, butter, sugar, flour, cinnamon, and often oats and brown sugar, ginger, and/or nutmeg.

What is another name for crumble dessert? ›

In an actual crisp, as in apple crisp or strawberry crisp, the oats in the topping crisp up as it bakes, hence the name. As time has gone by, though, the lines have blurred and the names crumble and crisp are now used interchangeably.

What's the difference between crisp and streusel? ›

There are two main streusel types, crisp and crumble, which also correspond with the fruit bakes of the same names. These names tend to be used interchangeably, but if you want to get technical, there is a difference. Crisp streusel includes oats, while crumble streusel does not.

Why is it called streusel? ›

The term "streusel" is derived from the German word "Streusel," which translates to "something scattered or sprinkled." This name aptly characterizes streusel as a crumbly topping comprising flour, butter, and sugar that is scattered over various baked goods like muffins, breads, pies, and cakes.
