Ward began work in the architectural office of Abram Garfield. He set up his own office in 1936 and in 1941 became a partner in Ward Later; he' was a partner with G. Frederick Schneider and they opened a branch office in Arlington. Va. In recent years, Mr.

Ward has been senior partner in Ward Ovington Glaser Architects. The Arlington office was separated from the partnership and operated by Mr. Ward. He was an architectural consultant for the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare.

designed schools in Arlington, Va. When he became ill, he was doing his first home design in 30 years, an addition to a house in Pepper Pike where he planned to move. W.He was on the board of trustees of the 1 Cleveland Vocational Guidance and Rehabilitation Center, and also did research on child abuse for several United Torch agencies. Mr. Ward was a member of the Hermit Club and the American Institute of Architects.

He taught architecture at the old Cleveland College of Western Reserve University. Surviving are sisters, Rhea Woodruff of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Alva R. Tilton of Venice, and brothers, Albert E. of Charleston, S.C., and Robert E. of WinstonSalem.

Joseph A. Schmitt A Services for Joseph A. Schmitt, 89, developer of -most of Garfield Heights, will at 10 a.m. tomorrow at St. Therese CathOlic Church, 5276 E.

105th Garfield Heights. 51 Mr. Schmitt died Sunday at Jennings Home. He had been in declining health for the past five years. He was born in Garfield Heights on a farm between McCracken Rd.

and South Highland St. He developed the city south of Granger Rd. Schmitt was a valuator for the Cleveland Real Estate Board from 1920 1 to 1928 and for several of those years was the board's acting president. -He had his own real estate business from 1528 1 to 1933, then became a valuator for the Home Owner Loan Corp. until 1935 when he became a valuator for the Federal Housing Administration.

He began his land developwent business in about 1943. Mr. Schmitt was a graduate of Name High School and attended Dyke ColHe taught for a while at the old Cleveand College of Western Reserve University. He was a justice of the peace in Garfield eights from 1909 to 1920 and chairman of zoning and planning board from 1945 to Surviving are his wife. Anna; son, John a trust officer of Central National Bank; daughter, Kathryn A.

Collingwood, principal of Roosevelt Elementary School in Garfield Heights; 13 grandchildren, six great-grand- children and three Obituaries David Ward, was architect Architect David M. Ward primarily designed churches and schools. and many of his school buildings won citations in architectural exhibits at the American of School Administrators conventions. His designs included Mayfield High School, the fine. arts building at Kent Ward State University, the Ashland College Library, the Cleveland Speech and Hearing Center and the Federated Church at Falls.

He also designed the public library at University Circle, Brentwood Hospital and Akron Child Guidance Center. Mr. Ward. 70, of 13415 Shaker Sunday at Highland View Hospital a series of strokes which began Jan. 4,25.
